MONTREAL, March 6 - The Support Committee for Justice for the
Duplessis Orphans said today that it would continue fighting, and it made
public the massive support being garnered: some sixty major public figures
from every walk of life announced their support for the cause, including
playwright Michel Tremblay, author and comedian Guy-A. Lepage, author Arlette
Cousture, novelist Antonine Maillet, filmmakers Pierre Falardeau and Gilles
Carle, author, composer and singer Richard Séguin, union leader Michel
Chartrand, and the president of Doctors of the World (Canada), Dr. Réjean
Thomas. These are just some of the many well- known names which have taken up
the cause.
    Dr. Denis Lazure, president of the Support Committee for Justice for the
Duplessis Orphans, also announced that a petition will be tabled at the
National Assembly in the coming months. He reiterated the urgency for the
government and the bishops to offer concrete reparation, even if partial, for
the injustices suffered by these victims. The petition will ask the National
Assembly to intervene in getting the Bouchard government to implement the
recommendations of the Parliamentary Commission, which studied the Quebec
Ombudsman's report in 1997 and proposed that reasonable compensation be
awarded to the victims. This report, with which the Bouchard government still
refuses to comply, was clear on the necessity to individually compensate the
victims. It is important to remember as well that this report was unanimously
approved by the Quebec National Assembly's Committee on Institutions.
Furthermore, the Quebec government is the only government in the country that
continues to refuse to compensate these victims of institutional abuse;
elsewhere in Canada, such victims have been compensated fairly and humanely.

orphelins de Duplessis, a tenu à préciser aujourd'hui que sa lutte continue
toujours et il a rendu publics les appuis de taille qui se manifestent : en
effet on annonçait qu'une soixantaine de personnalités bien en vue ont donné
leur appui à cette cause dont le dramaturge Michel Tremblay, l'auteur et
comédien Guy A. Lepage, l'auteure Arlette Cousture, la romancière Antonine
Maillet, les cinéastes Pierre Falardeau et Gilles Carle,
l'auteur-compositeur-interprète Richard Séguin, le syndicaliste Michel
Chartrand ainsi que le Dr Réjean Thomas, président de Médecins du monde
(Canada), pour ne nommer que quelques-unes des nombreuses personnalités issues
de tous les milieux de la société.
    Le Dr Denis Lazure, président du Comité pour la justice aux orphelins de
Duplessis, a également fait l'annonce d'une pétition qui sera déposée à
l'Assemblée nationale dans les prochains mois. Il a rappelé qu'il devient
urgent pour le Gouvernement et les Evêques d'offrir une réparation concrète,
bien que partielle, pour les injustices qu'ont subies ces victimes. La
pétition, demande à l'Assemblée nationale d'intervenir auprès du Gouvernement
Bouchard pour qu'il donne suite aux recommandations de la Commission
parlementaire qui avait étudié en 1997 le rapport du Protecteur du citoyen et
qui proposait qu'une indemnisation raisonnable soit versée aux victimes; ce
rapport, sur lequel le Gouvernement Bouchard refuse d'obtempérer, était
pourtant clair sur la nécessité d'indemniser individuellement les victimes.
Rappelons que ce rapport fut appuyé unanimement par la Commission des
institutions de l'Assemblée nationale et signalons enfin que le Gouvernement
du Québec est le seul à refuser d'indemniser ces victimes d'abus
institutionnels alors que partout ailleurs au Canada, les victimes ont été
compensées de manière juste et humaine. Les citoyens peuvent obtenir une copie
